Different Types of Apples Best Used For Juicing
Do you know that there are actually more than 7,500 species of apples being grown worldwide? Isn’t it great to know that we have a lot of freedom in choosing apples for juicing?
But take note that all apples are not created equal. There are apples that are terrible for juicing, such as the purple coloured ones from the West Indies; their skin is just too heavy and not delicious for juicing.
So let’s check-out the different apple varieties recommended for juicing.
1. Red Delicious Apple
The red delicious apple is the number one choice and most commonly used by many home juicers. What’s great about this variety of apple is that it produces a lot of sugar naturally, making your juice one of the sweetest and best tasting.
I normally leave the skin of the red delicious apple when juicing in order to get the highest amount of nutrition from the apples. Though this may give your juice a darker colour and a different taste than you used to, it will be very nutritious.
Also, I suggest that you use red delicious apples that are already closer to being ripe for a more and better juice. If you have some extra time, try to learn how to determine perfectly ripe apples among the bunch.
2. Gala Apples
The gala apples that we commonly find in our local market are not only ideal for snacking, but they are also the best one for juicing.
When using gala apples for juicing, you should prefer for home-grown ones as they are much sweeter and juicier compared to the ones found in the supermarket which is also often floury.
No one has ever provided a definite reason behind this, but it is thought that gala apples probably don’t travel well compared to other varieties.
This is why some serious home juicers grow gala apple in their own yard; you might consider doing so as well if you are planning to be juicing for a long time.
Just a little trivia: Gala apples actually hail from the land of New Zealand and were only brought in the United States in the early 1970s. Today, gala apples are the second most popular apple in the United States, next to Red Delicious Apple.
3. Yellow Delicious Apples
If you want your juice to be tart tasting, then yellow delicious apples is a great choice for you. This variety is a lot less sweet compared to red delicious and gala apples.
Though the three varieties have the same sugar content, yellow delicious apples apparently have much higher acid content that overpowers the fruit's sweetness.
Of course, you can always add sweetener to your yellow delicious apple juice just in case your kids don’t like the idea of tart tasting juice.
4. Granny Smith
You might be wondering what this variety of apple is doing in this list since you find their taste bitter and acidic. But if low-sugar juicing is what you are looking for, then the granny smith is going to be the best choice.
In addition to being a crispy piece to your salads, granny smith apple is also filled with nutritional benefits; juicing them can even help you regulate your blood sugar levels and ideal for weight loss.
Tips to Find Best Apple for Juicing
You need to follow two tips in order to find the best apples for juicing. Let’s check this guide below:
1. Always Opt For The Fresh Apples
You should use fresh apples for your juice. If it is possible to pick them right off the tree and juice them immediately, the better. If not, then just at least try to purchase fresh-picked apples from your local farm.
2. Choose Only The Organic Ones
This is very important since most of the store-purchased apples are contaminated with pesticides and other chemicals. I have just learned that most of the apples are treated with more than 50 different pesticides and chemicals.
If you can’t find organic apples, I suggest that you do not juice apples. You should avoid consuming a large amount of harmful pesticides and chemicals. Take note that pesticides are poison and they have been liked to several health problems, such as cancer.
Whatever variety of apple you are using, just make sure that you always remove the seeds. Apple’s seeds actually contain poisonous cyanide, and it can even bring a terrible taste to your apple juice.
Anyway, you now have the list of the best apples for juicing. I’m sure you can easily find them in your local supermarket or even freshly pick them around your neighbourhood.
If you are brave enough, then try juicing the stranger varieties. We’ll never know, it might even pleasantly surprise us with the result.
