History of Fries
Peru is the origin of potatoes, and it spread to another part of Latin America. Fried potatoes which were cooked in fat over a fire was a practice thousands of years ago.
Potatoes were then discovered and brought back to Europe by the Spanish conquistadors wherein they were used as hog feed. Potatoes were also banned in 1748 because the French were convinced that they have caused leprosy.
But, a French army medical officer in the name of Antoine-Augustine Parmentier was then forced to eat potatoes as the POW and so discovered the culinary potential of the potatoes.
Because of his efforts, Paris Faculty of Medicine has declared that potatoes were considered to be edible for humans in 1772. However, in 1785, it took a scarcity for the French to begin eating them in earnest.
And in 1802, the chef of the White House named Honoré Julien served potatoes in the French manner at a state dinner. These potatoes were considered to be deep-fried while raw being in small cuttings. So, French fries had already arrived. The term French fried which means deep-fried was already used for some other foods too by the early 20th century.
